Iterated Greedy Graph Coloring and theDi

Many heuristic algorithms have been proposed for graph coloring. The simplest is perhaps the greedy algorithm. Many variations have been proposed for this algorithm at various levels of sophistication, but it is generally assumed that the coloring will occur in a single attempt. We note that if a new permutation of the vertices is chosen which respects the independent sets of a previous colorin...

A new Simulated Annealing algorithm for the robust coloring problem

The Robust Coloring Problem (RCP) is a generalization of the well-known Graph Coloring Problem where we seek for a solution that remains valid when extra edges are added. The RCP is used in scheduling of events with possible last-minute changes and study frequency assignments of the electromagnetic spectrum. This problem has been proved as NP-hard and in instances larger than 30 vertices, meta-...

On the Complexity of Distributed Greedy Coloring

Distributed Greedy Coloring is an interesting and intuitive variation of the standard Coloring problem. It still consists in coloring in a distributed setting each node of a given graph in such a way that two adjacent nodes do not get the same color, but it adds a further constraint. Given an order among the colors, a coloring is said to be greedy if there does not exist a node for which its as...

Multipass greedy coloring of simple uniform hypergraphs

Let m∗(n) be the minimum number of edges in an n-uniform simple hypergraph that is not two colorable. We prove that m∗(n) = Ω(4n/ ln(n)). Our result generalizes to r-coloring of b-simple uniform hypergraphs. For fixed r and b we prove that a maximum vertex degree in b-simple n-uniform hypergraph that is not r-colorable must be Ω(rn/ ln(n)). By trimming arguments it implies that every such graph...

Greedy Algorithms for the Minimum Sum Coloring Problem

In this paper we present our study of greedy algorithms for solving the minimum sum coloring problem (MSCP). We propose two families of greedy algorithms for solving MSCP, and suggest improvements to the two greedy algorithms most often referred to in the literature for solving the graph coloring problem (GCP): DSATUR [1] and RLF [2].
